How does a political party get its election symbol?

The Election Commission allots election symbols to political parties under ‘The Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1986. However, to get election symbols, political parties have to fulfill certain rules and conditions. According to the information, more than 100 election symbols remain in reserve with the Election Commission. These symbols have not been given to any party yet. Whenever the time comes to release election symbols, the Election Commission releases one of them for the party. However, when a party demands a particular symbol, the Commission also considers it.

Political parties are not given election symbols with photos of animals and birds. Animal rights activists had opposed this. In fact, parties used to parade animals and birds with their symbols during the campaign. For this reason, animal rights activists called it cruelty. After this the Election Commission had banned such symbols. At the same time, if the special election symbol sought by a political party is not allotted to any other party, then the Election Commission can issue it.
